Asrani’s manager reveals veteran actor wishes quiet farewell: I want to go like a common man

Mumbai: Asrani, veteran actor and comedian Asrani’s longtime manager, revealed that the ‘Sholay’ actor wanted to leave the world quietly like a common man, so his family revealed the legendary actor’s death only after performing the last rites.

Speaking to ANI, Asrani’s longtime manager Babu Bhai Theeba revealed that the Sholay actor wanted to leave the world quietly like a common man.

“Asrani sahib had told me and his wife Manju that he was a very simple man who wanted to leave this world like a common man. He didn’t want anything extravagant, unlike the farewells usually given to film stars. He had said, ‘The way I live with peace and simplicity, that’s the way I also want to go. That’s why we performed his last rites privately,'” Babubhai Theeba shared.

84 year old Asrani was ill for some time. According to Theeba, the veteran actor was admitted to Bharatiya Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Juhu four days before his demise.

Babu Bhai Theeba told ANI, “He was feeling weak for 15 days. Four days ago, he had severe difficulty in breathing, so he visited the doctor. After medical advice, he was admitted to the hospital and we had to cancel the shoot. Initially, he showed signs of recovery, but on the third day his condition worsened and unfortunately, he passed away on the fourth day.”

After learning about Asrani’s demise, many people expressed their heartfelt condolences on social media.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Asrani a “talented entertainer” and a “versatile artiste”.

In an ex-post, PM Modi wrote, “Deeply saddened by the demise of Shri Govardhan Asrani ji. A talented entertainer and truly versatile artiste, he entertained audiences for generations. He added joy and laughter to the lives of countless people especially through his unforgettable performances.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also expressed condolences.

“The demise of renowned actor Asrani ji is extremely sad. Asrani ji contributed to Indian cinema throughout his life and made a place in the hearts of millions by making people laugh. May God give his family and fans the strength to bear this profound loss. Om Shanti,” he shared on X.

Acknowledging the tributes pouring in for Asrani, Theeba thanked everyone for showering love on the departed soul.

He said, “I would like to sincerely thank Narendra Modi Sahab for remembering Asrani ji. I am also grateful to all those who paid tribute to Asrani ji, celebrated his life and appreciated his work.”

Asrani will be seen for the last time on screen in the films ‘Bhoot Bangla’ and ‘Haivaan’. (ANI)
