Assi Movie Review | Kani Kusruti’s performance is strong, but Taapsee Pannu falls flat in the social drama.

Anubhav Sinha is one director whose films often say one thing – it’s clear what he wants to say, but how he says it is the real test. After films like ‘Mulk’, ‘Article 15’ and ‘Thappad’, now his new film ‘Assi’ is in front of us. The film touches on a serious social issue, but at some points it reaches cinematic heights and at others it falters.

Story: A deep wound on the forehead of society

‘Aassi’ is not an entertainment film but it presents the bitter and frightening reality of the society. The film opens with a shocking statistic—about 30,000 rape cases are reported in India every year. This is not just a number but a big question mark on the security of our system and society.
The story of the film revolves around Prema (Kani Kusruti). One night, while returning home, she is kidnapped and brutally raped. The criminals leave him on the railway track. The specialty of the director here is that he has focused on Parima’s pain, her mental trauma and her subsequent struggle for justice instead of showing the gravity of the incident.

As the story progresses, a mysterious movement known as the “Six Men” emerges. It speaks for justice in its own way by being the voice of those disillusioned with the system. However, the film does not delve too deep into this track. The theme of the story is strong, but the writing has some flaws. In today’s time, aspects like mobile location tracking and digital evidence could have been shown better. The climax also feels a little drawn out and long.

Eighty: performance

Kani Kusruti’s performance is the biggest strength of the film. She plays her character with great sincerity. She speaks very little, yet her eyes and expressions speak volumes. Taapsee Pannu has played the role of a lawyer. She has previously given strong courtroom performances in films like Pink and Mulk. Here too she impresses in parts, but her performance is not consistently strong throughout the film. Mohammad Zeeshan Ayub has played the role of a quiet husband. His performance is measured and effective. The scene at the hospital, where he takes care of his son, is particularly touching. Kumud Mishra has not got many powerful roles. His work in Article 15 was very influential. His character is not fully developed here. Revathi has given a balanced and commendable performance. Other actors do not get much scope.

Eighty: direction

Director Anubhav Sinha is known for making films on social issues. He has previously directed films like Thappad and Anek. Even in the eighties, his intention is clear: to show society.
However, the direction weakens at some places. The courtroom scenes could have been more powerful. Even the track ‘Umbrella Man’ could have been handled better. There are many good ideas in the film, but they are not presented with full force.

Eighty: Technical aspects

Cinematography is good. There are several moments where the camera stays still, causing the characters to come into the frame differently. It creates a certain gravity.
The background score is nice and helps maintain the tension. The songs are not particularly memorable. The editing seems a bit sloppy. A tighter and shorter cut would have enhanced the effect. The production design feels authentic and believable.

Eighty: The Last Judgment

Assi is an important film. It makes you think and brings out the serious issue of the society. It has both merits and demerits. The story is strong, but the writing and presentation are lacking in some places. In the performance, Kanni Kusruti stands out.
The film is not perfect, but its theme is important. It may not fully satisfy, but it certainly makes you think.
3 out of 5 stars for eighty.
