Australian progressive rock band Karnivool to perform alongside indie artists in Bengaluru this weekend

Adopting a term and movement that originated in the US and Europe in the 1980s, Indie Grrrl’s India initiative will feature performances by singer-songwriter and producer Sanoli Chowdhury, singer-songwriter Sahana Naresh and singer-producer Yuhina. The event, taking place in Bengaluru this weekend, will see three artists from the city come together to start a movement.

While Choudhury is focusing on releasing two music videos and a live performance single from Indie Girl Show, Sahana Naresh recently released a bilingual folk-electronic song ‘Raat Kate’ with producer Nirmit Shah. Yuhina will perform with her debut EP mnemonic,

In a press release about Indie Grrrl, the first of three shows in Mumbai and Delhi, the artists said, “With this brand we aim to create a movement of independent female artists in India. We will coordinate, share and help each other to advance our careers and also learn how to advocate for our interests with national music organizations. We aim to create self-help with social media platforms that will keep us informed and help us promote various events like Indie Grrrl – all female tours, one-off concerts, festivals and meetups.”

One of the new festivals held at the peak of the monsoon, which other organisers often risk, Jingle Land is hosting rock, fusion and hip-hop stalwarts from across the country for a day-long festival this weekend.

Headline artists include Carnatic fusion and rock-influenced band Agam, who are performing just a month before they head to Australia for shows, as well as New Delhi rock veterans Parikrama (who are releasing more music than ever, including songs like ‘Life Is Certain’, ‘Demons of Time’ and ‘Translucent Night’). Then, there’s Bengaluru fusion act Lagori, Kerala band Project Malabaricus led by Sitara Krishnakumar, Malayalam hip-hop crew Street Academics and Assamese-origin singer-songwriter Rahul Rajkhowa.

Australian progressive rock band Karnivool have been gaining quite a following in India over the past few years, having first arrived in the country in 2011 following the release of their stellar album. Sound AwakenThis week, the band adds another force to the international artistes already dominating India’s event calendar when it performs for the first time in Bengaluru as part of a four-city tour called the Tri Continental Drift Tour.

Vocalist Ian Kenny said in a video message to fans via social media, “India, we have missed you so much. We are coming back there on June 9 for our Tri Continental Drift Tour. Can’t wait to get there. We had a great time last time we went there, so let’s go again.” This will be their fourth and final show as part of the India tour, making it the fifth time Karnivool is performing in India.

The band also features city-based alternative rock artist My Conscience, who released his debut single ‘Confessions’ late last year.
