Avatar 3 panned by critics in first review

For the proposed fourth and fifth films, they will likely deal with earth and air.”

BBC Avatar 3 was called ‘the longest and worst so far’ in the franchise, and criticized for ‘197 minutes of screensaver graphics, clumsy dialogue, loose plotting and hippy-dippy New Age spirituality’. Rating it 1/5, the review stated: “Avatar: Fire and Ash feels unrealistic and un-immersive, like an old arcade game.”

“…How strange it is to watch James Cameron’s new movie, it feels like something you’ve seen before,” reads indiewireThe review stated, “Not only does the third installment of the Avatar saga lack the groundbreaking spectacle of its predecessors (the second of which was somehow even more astonishing than the first), it also lacks the relative novelty of its storytelling.”

Wire Avatar was also given a 3 1/5 rating and said it was ‘like looking at £300 million worth of glitter in a fish tank’. The review stated, “While it’s entirely fair to point out that he might be doing something right, as the combined global box-office earnings of the Avatar films now exceed $5 billion (£3.7 billion), the question is how much more moviegoers will really want, or can take, given how surprisingly little this latest installment has to add.”

James Cameron also gets praise

Not everyone condemned Avatar 3, because ignThe review reads: “The Water Way didn’t destroy Avatar so much as it drowned it.” While acknowledging that the film gives a feeling of déjà vu, the critic nevertheless wrote, “Cameron gives his trademark existing ideas great shape, but the new film also ‘rhymes’.”

deadline Called it a ‘battle epic for the ages’ in his review text: “Cameron knows how to create spectacle better than anyone, and this incarnation builds his world to such a high standard that I would venture to say you could put the first two films together and it still wouldn’t add up to the fierce scale and magnitude of this battle.”

geek hangout The review called it ‘shallow spectacle still gets your money’s worth’: “Whatever you make of Avatar: Fire and Ash’s tale of blue aliens once again rising up against the annihilation of the human race, the threequel is an aesthetic triumph as well as an indictment of much of what comes out of the Hollywood blockbuster machine.”

Empire Also seemed impressed, giving Avatar: Fire and Ash a 4/5 rating and writing, “In a big, busy and unwieldy Avatar, James Cameron once again displays his blockbuster mastery. Despite some repetitive moments, this is truly epic cinema, worth watching for three hours.”
