Payal Kapadia is being appreciated a lot We imagine everything as lightEarned three awards in the longlist of BAFA Film Awards 2025. The Malayalam film was recently released on Disney+Hotstar.
We imagine everything as light It has been nominated in the English-language categories but not in Best Director, Original Screenplay and Best Film. The film, starring Kani Kushruti, Divya Prabha and Chhaya Kadam, won the Grand Prix award at the Cannes Film Festival in May, 2024.
Kapadia’s competitors for Best Director are Sean Baker, Brady Corbett and Denis Villeneuve. Black Dog, The Count of Monte Cristo And Emilia Perez Leading the way in the Best Film category.
Kapadia’s film, An Song for Mumbai, depicts the underlying loneliness experienced by three women who are outsiders in the big city. Working as nurses in a hospital, they hold each other together while fighting their internal battles amid the bustling world of Mumbai.

We imagine everything as light, which won Best International Feature at the Gotham Awards in December, 2024, has earned two Golden Globes 2025 nominations (Best Director and Best Foreign Language Film). The film tops former US President Barack Obama’s list of recommended films for the year 2024.
The film was recently in the news when it was not selected as India’s official entry to the Oscars by the Film Federation of India (FFI). Lapata Ladies, Kiran Rao’s directorial debut was chosen as India’s official presentation. The film was out of the Oscar race. Kapadia’s film, an international co-production, was shortlisted by France as a potential submission for the Oscars.
