When Shemmer Sharafudin and Renjith Raghunathan sold their web development company in 2017, they imagined that they would end some out-of-the-box for the film industry. He has launched one type of mobile app behind the scene to streamline film production. “Most of the film production has applications to help with the pre-production phase. But our app is unique in the sense that the film incorporates all three important stages of production-pre-production, production and post-production,” Sherer says.
Shemer and Rainjith have been working on the app since 2023 and have tested their modules with the second season of the web series Kerala Crime Files Last year. The first film that has fully used the app is Khalid Rahman’s play drama, Alappuzha gymkhanaIs ready to release next month.

Shemer recalls that he rarely watched movies until his love for cinema was seen when he saw Ustad Hotel (2012) living in Dubai. “By then both of us had reached a saturation point running the company. So we sold it and I returned home with a plan to become a filmmaker, while Renjith joined another company,” says Shemer. The app can be accessed by producer/production house, director and their team, production team, location manager, casting director, costume designer, art director, cinematographer, spot editor, editor, CG team and colorist.
Shemer explains that once the script is locked, the app allows assistant directors (ADS) to analyze the script, identify and tag the essential elements such as characters, locations, props and cupboards. They can add additional details such as reference photos and details in all elements.
Casting manager, location manager, production designer and costume designer can work directly on the brakedown related to the app with the directions and references provided by the directions, thus eliminating the risk of misalgnament, disabilities and errors. “For example, a location manager can enter a matching space including addresses, maps, contact numbers and photos through this app. Similarly, a costume designer can enter the dress option for every character. The director or team can see all these options in real time and decide accordingly.”

He says that the advertising app will benefit the most. “I know how difficult this advertisement is. They are the people known to all-producer, crew and artists. They are always on tanturous because they have to place a tab on everything. A small mistake can increase the schedule.”
The app simplifies the complex task of filmmaking by allowing users to create stripboard (a document that has a line for each scene in the schedule), shooting schedule arises and the call sheet is managed. It also gives a complete module to manage the reports of the camera and the editor – the documents that provide detailed information about the footage, so that the information phase of the later production is conducted and easily accessible.
In addition to Shemer and Renjith, the team has a trade partner as Jamashi P, an engineer-cum-entry, and actor-enthusiast Jens Bhaskar. The colleagues are the directors Sunil Ibrahim, cinematographer Swarup Philip, actors Gibin Gopinath and Sija Rose and Editor V Sajan.

“The new filmmakers are open to use it, while people used for the current work flow take time to explain,” says Jamshi. Shemer recalls that Khalid was initially doubted about using the app Alappuzha gymkhana“He said it will not work in Malayalam cinema because sometimes they decide a scene on a cup of tea. We told them that the app is designed in this way. He agreed to make an attempt and eventually worked for them,” Sherer says.
Nissam says that he is very happy how the app has performed so far during the pre-production phase I no oneWhich will go on the floor in Thiruvananthapuram next month. “As we reach everyone using the update app, no one can make an excuse that he did not know about the change. It also saves a lot of paperwork. I have been an advertisement and we are used to reach the set with a bag full of printouts every day,” says Nissam.
Says Shemer, “We are not implementing it to anyone. Also, we are adding new features according to the suggestions and reactions of those that are using it. It was a big moment when we could affect experienced cinematographer PC Shriram Sir. He also recommended some prominent manufacturers.”
The team is already interacting with manufacturers and producers in other languages. “Many people are trying to streamline this process manually. Now that we are giving them a ready-to-use product, we are sure they will latch on it. We have received positive reactions from them so far,” says Jamshi.
