Beyoncé allows Kamala Harris to use her song Freedom for US presidential election campaign: Report

A day after US President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 presidential race, Vice President Kamala Harris was on the campaign trail. On Monday, she made her first public appearance since Joe Biden endorsed her candidacy and attended Beyoncé’s Freedom. According to the report, Beyoncé, who is known for maintaining strict approval guidelines for her music, ‘gave Kamala’s campaign quick approval when they asked for permission to use Freedom’ on Monday – just hours before the song was set to go out, a source told the media outlet.

At her campaign headquarters on Monday night, Kamala came out singing the following lyrics: “Freedom, freedom / Where are you? / Because I want freedom too / I break the chains myself / I won’t let my freedom rot in hell / Hey! I’ll keep running / Because winners don’t quit.”

Although Beyoncé has not officially endorsed Kamala Harris since Joe Biden announced he would not seek a second term, allowing Freedom to be used as a campaign song shows that the politician has the singer’s support. Neither the Kamala campaign nor representatives of Beyoncé, who has a history of supporting Democratic candidates, have yet to officially say anything related to the matter.

However, shortly after Joe’s announcement, Beyoncé’s mother Tina Knowles supported Kamala on Sunday. She posted a photo of herself with Kamala on Instagram, writing, “New, young, radiant energy!!!!” She further added, “Putting aside personal ego, power and fame. That is the definition of a great leader. President Biden, thank you for your service and your leadership. Vice President Kamala Harris moves on to the presidency. Let’s move on.”

Beyoncé’s history with Democrats

In 2013, she sang the U.S. national anthem at President Barack Obama’s inauguration. In 2016, Beyoncé and her husband Jay-Z headlined a pre-election concert for Hillary Clinton in Cleveland, Ohio. “I want my daughter to see a woman leading our country and know that her possibilities are limitless,” Beyoncé said at the time. “And that’s why I’m with her.” In 2020, Beyoncé endorsed the Joe Biden–Kamala Harris election.
