Biff 2025: Jaffer Panahi, banned Iranian director, named Asian Filmmaker of the Year at Busan Film Festival

Washington: Iranian filmmaker Zafar Panahi has been tapped for the Asian Filmmaker of the Year Award at the 30th Busan International Film Festival.

He was then recognized at the 78th Cannes Film Festival. Panahi accepted Palme D’Or for “It’s Just a accident”, a film directly inspired in jail in a prestigious incident.

His films constantly examine the subjects of personal freedom and resistance, often focusing on marginalized voices within the Iranian society.

Busan’s Asian filmmaker of the year Honor goes to individuals or organizations who have a lot of advanced in Asian cinema and culture. Panahi will receive the award at the opening ceremony of the festival on 17 September.

The 30th edition of Busan runs from 17 to 26 September, with the Asian material and the film market from 20 to 23 September, according to the variety.
