Talking about the match, South Africa won the toss and decided to bowl first. A century partnership between Smriti Mandhana (45 runs from 58 balls, with the help of eight fours) and Shafali Verma opened the scoring for India, followed by a 62-run partnership between Shafali (87 runs from 78 balls, with the help of seven fours and two sixes) and Jemimah Rodrigues (24 runs from 37 balls, with the help of one four). India were at a good position at 166/2.
A 52-run partnership between captain Harmanpreet Kaur (20 off 29 balls with two fours) and Deepti Sharma took India past 200 runs. The final innings from Deepti (58 runs in 58 balls with the help of three fours and one six) and Richa Ghosh (34 runs in 24 balls with the help of three fours and two sixes) helped India reach 298/7 in 50 overs.
Ayabonga Khaka (3/58) was the highest wicket taker for South Africa.
During the run-chase, things started off for SA with a fifty-run partnership, with Tazmin Britts (23 from 35 balls, with two fours and a six) becoming the first victim. Ultimately, despite captain Laura Wolvaardt’s dominance, Shafali Verma (2/36) and Sri Charani’s golden arms reduced South Africa to 148/5.
Wolvaardt made a 61-run partnership for the sixth wicket with Anne Dirksen (37 runs in 35 balls with the help of one four and two sixes), which gradually started putting pressure on India. Wolvaardt (101 off 98 balls with the help of 11 fours and a six) continued his fine form and brought up his century after scoring 169 against England in the semi-final a few days ago.
However, Deepti’s game-changing spell saw both set batsmen dismissed and the Proteas struggled to 221/8. She became the first Indian woman to achieve a four-for in a World Cup final. Deepti (5/39) eventually managed to convert it into a fiver as India created history by bowling out South Africa for 246 runs and winning their maiden World Cup title.
