Spain’s Interior Ministry announced on September 23 that five people had been arrested and others were under investigation.
brad pitt’s rep spoke out recently after scammers were arrested for impersonating the actor to dupe women on social media. The Oscar winner, 60, who has no official social media accounts, issued the warning through his rep on September 25. Brad’s rep told People, “It’s terrible that scammers take advantage of fans’ strong relationships with celebrities, and this is an important reminder not to respond to unsolicited online contacts, especially from actors who have no social media presence.”
Spain’s Interior Ministry announced on September 23 that five people had been arrested, and several others were under investigation, for being involved in a “criminal organization” that allegedly defrauded two women online out of more than $350,000. Authorities said the scammers posed as a “fake Brad Pitt” to dupe fans, promising romantic relationships and asking the women to transfer money to investment projects.
Three suspects were arrested in November, and two more in July, facing charges including fraud, money laundering and forgery.
Earlier, many other celebrities have warned fans about fake accounts trying to scam people online. Stars like Whoopi Goldberg, Tom Hanks and Johnny Depp have also spoken about similar incidents.
In August, actress Florence Pugh spoke out on her Instagram Stories about fake accounts claiming to be her. “I wanted to remind everyone that I do not have any other accounts besides this one,” Florence, 28, told IANS. She said some people had been asked for money or personal communication from fake accounts claiming to be her.
“First of all I’m sorry that this is a weird hobby that some people like to do, and I’m also sorry that you [led] “We have to trust that these places are safe,” Florence said, urging fans to unfollow and report fake accounts.
