Update on Suga’s DUI case

“We served a summary order in accordance with our standards of operation,” Korea JoongAng Daily quoted a prosecutor’s official as saying. The amount of the fine has not been disclosed. The BTS member was investigated for driving an e-scooter under the influence of alcohol in Seoul on Aug. 6. His blood alcohol level at the time was reportedly 0.227%. This is three times higher than the 0.08% needed to revoke a driver’s license.

Suga was questioned by the police last month

On August 23, Suga was questioned for three hours at Yongsan Police Station in Seoul. He admitted his mistake during the interrogation and later apologized to his fans and followers. In South Korea, if a person driving under the influence has a blood alcohol level of more than 0.08 percent, he or she can be sentenced to more than one year in prison (but less than two years) or fined 5-10 million won. If the alcohol level is more than 0.2 percent, the prison sentence can be more than two years but less than five years. The fine can be between 10-20 million won.

Suga apologized several times

In August, Suga posted a handwritten apology to fellow BTS members and fans on social media, days before he appeared for questioning by police in connection with a drunk driving (DUI) incident investigation against him. In a post shared on BTS’s Weverse page, he reiterated that he was sorry for driving his electric scooter on the sidewalk after drinking alcohol.

Suga wrote in the letter, “I would like to apologize once again in a shameful manner. I sincerely apologize for the disappointment my misbehavior has caused to my fans and those who have shown me love. I have made a huge mistake and forgotten my responsibility to repay everyone by doing things that deserve the love I have received. On August 6, I made the mistake of driving an electric scooter on the sidewalk after drinking alcohol.”

He also added, “Also, I am sorry for the confusion caused by my hastily posted first apology on August 7. I should have thought more deeply about my actions and been more careful, but I did not.” Currently, Suga is serving as a social service agent, an alternative form of military service in South Korea.
