BTS V and Jungkook sue ‘cyber-wrecker’ YouTuber: Trial to begin today

BTS members Jungkook and V sued South Korean YouTuber Sojang, also known as Park Joo Ah, for defamation in March 2024. Both the BTS members and their agency Bighit Music are taking legal action against the YouTuber for defamation, and the trial is set to begin soon.

BTS V and Jungkook will sue YouTube channel Taldeok Camp (Sojang)

What is the BTS members’ lawsuit about?

The members have accused the accused of culpability and will seek compensation of 90 million won, which is equivalent to about $66,100 in the US.

In June 2024, BIGHIT MUSIC targeted Sojang, who allegedly defamed BTS members, V and Jungkook. Through this conversation, it was revealed that the music label had previously filed a lawsuit against the YouTuber in 2022 for not only defamation but also for obstruction of business. During the year 2023, BIGHIT had once again filed a civil suit against the accused, claiming damages for defamation and unlawful actions.

In a statement released on June 28, 2024, the music label wrote, “In addition to the authors of the malicious posts, we are separately taking legal action against those who violated the artist’s privacy. We are pursuing civil and criminal cases against the so-called “cyber-wreckers,” including the YouTube channel (“Sojang”).”

When is the test?

The first hearing of the case will be held today, August 23, 2024. The trial against A, Sojang, who runs Taldec Camp on YouTube, will be held at 10:10 am at Seoul Western District Court Civil Division 12. Deputy Chief Judge Lee Kwan-hyung is expected to oversee the case in today’s court.

It is also said that according to BIGHIT MUSIC there is no connection between Body & Brain and BTS. They have accused Body & Brain of being fictitious and declared that all BTS related content associated with the group should be removed immediately. If such incidents continue in the future, the music label will take legal action against them for illegal use of BTS’s intellectual property rights.

Who is Sojang?

YouTuber Sojang, also known as Park Joo Ah, runs Taldec Camp. She has been allegedly spreading rumors and false information about several K-pop idols, including BTS’s V and Jungkook. The BIGHIT company has held her responsible for constantly harassing the artists. Although some previous cases were dismissed by the courts, the music label continued to pressure the authorities to take strict action, eventually succeeding in its task.

BTS’s V previously commented on the issue on Weverse. The singer said, “Oh? I’ll take legal action. I’m getting some money for breakfast. You messed with my family and friends too. Bye.”

In 2022, she posted a video titled “The Private Life of the Country’s Boyfriend-Actor-Idol” on the online platform. The video defamed Korean singer Kang Daniel, spreading misinformation. Another similar incident involved IVE member Jung Won Young, who later filed a case against the YouTuber along with her agency Starship Entertainment and won the case. BTS is hoping to do the same.

However, it seems that the accused has found herself guilty for her act. In June 2023, she revealed her identity, writing, “Hi, this is Park Joo Ah, who operates Sojang (YouTube channel).”

In addition, she explained, “When BTS’s V said he knew my channel, I acted like an attention seeker, and I apologize for attacking him even more. I apologize to Jung Won Young, who suffered mentally from the video I made by piecing together videos and photos from the web and creating false information. I apologize to all the people who suffered mentally from the video I made spreading false information.” She apologized, saying, “I will accept the lawsuits. I apologize to the celebrities.”
