Cannes 2024: Payal Kapadia’s ‘All We Imagine as Light’ creates history for India, wins Grand Prix

Payal Kapadia played an important role in India’s historic victory. We all imagine ourselves as light It won the Grand Prix, the second-highest award at the Cannes Film Festival, on Saturday night.

Based on the story of two Kerala nurses living in contemporary Mumbai, the film was the first Indian film to participate in the main competition at Cannes in 30 years. It stars Indian actors Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha and Chhaya Kadam.

The jury for the 77th Cannes was chaired by barbie Directed by Greta Gerwig and starring such notables as Lily Gladstone, Hirokazu Koreeda, Eva Green, Omar Sy, Ebru Ceylan and others.

“Please don’t wait 30 years for Indian film,” Kapadia said while accepting the honour.

In 1994, Malayalam director Shaji N Karun’s rural classic ‘Swaham’ was the last Indian film to compete for the Palme d’Or.

Kapadia, an alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), is known for her acclaimed documentaries. A night of knowing nothingwhich premiered at the Directors’ Fortnight side-bar of the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Oeil d’Or (Golden Eye) award.
