Actor Chandan Roy Sanyal is no stranger to transformative roles, but his portrayal of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa Deb in Binodini – Ekti Natir Upakhyan is a deeply personal and spiritual milestone. Directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Ram Kamal Mukherjee, the film tells the inspirational story of Nati Binodini, a pioneering actress who rose from humble beginnings in the red-light district of Kolkata to redefine Bengali theatre. The guiding presence of Sri Ramakrishna in his life adds a deeply spiritual layer to his journey.
In the recently released first-look poster, Chandan’s uncanny resemblance to Sri Ramakrishna is adorable. His close-cropped gray hair, calm expression and humble demeanor highlight the mystic’s quiet spirituality. However, the actor revealed that stepping into this revered role was more than a physical transformation – it was a dedication to faith.
“For me, playing Sri Ramakrishna was a divine calling,” says Chandan. “His teachings have shaped my life since childhood. When Ram Kamal Mukherjee offered me this role, I felt that God had chosen me. After experiencing personal loss and embracing spirituality, I was ready to abandon my ego and become a vessel for His essence.
The actor involved himself in a rigorous preparation process, which included adopting a vegetarian lifestyle, practicing meditation and studying the teachings of the guru. “The role required more belief than performance,” he explains. “Sri Ramakrishna was the doer – I just let his spirit flow through me.”
