Watch: Charan Raj on composing hit tracks in ‘SSE’ and ‘Bheema’: My songs should surprise people

“This was the first song we composed for the film, and it’s always difficult to create the first song of any project. I had just finished the song Accra (starring Duniya Vijay) and that movie had many uplifting songs. SSE That was a different film and it took some time to understand the mood,” he said.
Charan has composed a wonderful background music Side B. Director Hemanth has repeatedly used the score in the film to make the drama more intense. Side B It was an interesting process. We were all still new Side A Title track. I couldn’t understand the tune side a The title track went out of my mind. Hemant wanted a second version of it, and he said the song should be very powerful. So the score you hear repeatedly in the film is derived from that riff Side B title track.”
Songs of side a It had a strong retro-synth flavour. “Hemanth loved that style,” says Charan. SSE, My second film with Hemant, Kavaludaari, I loved synthesizer-based music. I love electronic synthesizers. Learning about it has slowly become a passion. I keep watching tutorials. I love listening to retro synthesizer music by Aphex Twin and Daft Punk.”

He said, “I had to work with rappers to suit the energy and aggressive theme of the film. I incorporated hip-hop in the song. Initially, I wanted it to be like a cypher, like a rap battle. But there was no space for it in the film. We roped in two talented rappers and they brought in their team members who were adept at beatboxing. We all worked together on the song.”

hemant first movie, Godhi banna sadharan mykattu, announced the arrival of Charan Raj in the Kannada film music scene. Eight years later, Charan has worked in just 16 films. He takes time to create his music. Still, despite the limited work, he has developed a strong fan base that loves his willingness to experiment with every project.

Charan says, “If you give musicians time, we will try to create something new. When we don’t have time, we start repeating. In my case, if I feel I am repeating, I take a break. I learn new techniques during my breaks and try to understand styles I am not familiar with.”
Some of Charan’s songs did not make an immediate impact, but slowly grew in their influence on people, making them underrated gems. “This is the case with all my songs,” says Charan. “For me, a song should be surprising. When I listen to my song, it should have an unexpected quality. I strive to achieve that impact with every track,” he says.
