Although Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is expected to win the domestic box office battle in North America, things could be looking up for Mufasa on the global stage.
Sonic the Hedgehog is expected to top the US Christmas box office despite rivaling Disney’s Lion King prequel. However, it’s not like the thrilling Paramount flick had to climb mountains to achieve this feat. As audiences are moving on from the “Glicked” weekend, the Sonic threequel has already earned its franchise-best $6.5 million in Thursday previews.
Given how well previous installments had performed commercially, the first Sonic film set a record $3 million in Thursday previews in February 2020. Ultimately it achieved an opening of $58 million. The 2022 sequel, on the other hand, took a $6.5 million opening to the tune of $72 million.

Meanwhile, Mufasa: The Lion King fell far behind with a relatively disappointing gross of $3.3 million. The first 2019 Lion King live-action offering stormed the top-grossing tables with $23 million in previews, paving the way for a stellar $191 million debut.
Sonic 3 vs. Mufasa: Estimated Opening Score
Despite the pre-established score, Variety reported that both projects are expected to have similar results on their opening weekend. Sonic 3, which sees the return of Jim Carrey’s indispensable character Dr. Robotnik, is projected to wrap up the box office battle in the domestic North America race this weekend with $55 million to $60 million. Mufasa’s estimate also indicates that it will reach the $50 million mark.

In contrast, the Disney film will receive simultaneous international attention due to its global theatrical release this weekend. However, Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s overseas box office counters won’t open until Christmas Day.
Even in the review branch of the measuring cup, Sonic surpasses Mufasa, with critics giving it an 85% positive score on Rotten Tomatoes. In contrast, the Disney film falls with an incomparable 55%. Similarly, the Sonic threequel’s debut with an A on CinemaScore has helped it edge over Mufasa’s A-grade.
