Claudia Cardinley, Once Upon a Time in the West and 8 And Star called ‘Girlfriend of Italy’, dies on 87

Claudia Cardinley, Italian actor who was the leading star of European films of the 1960s and 70s, has died. She was 87 years old.

Italian film star Claudia Cardinley, who first gained fame as a sex symbol and later established himself as one of the leading stars of European cinema, died at the age of 87.

The actor died in Namers, France, who was surrounded by his children, his agent Laurent Seri told AFP.

Claudia acted in some of the most famous European films of the 1960s and 1970s, and also broke into Hollywood with some big hits. In the career that spread 150 films in decades, he also earned words like ‘Dream Girl’ and ‘Italy’s Girlfriend’, reflecting the craze for her in her motherland.

Claudia Cardinal Career

Claudia Cardinley was born in Tunisia to Sicilian parents, who moved to North Africa. After winning a beauty pageant in Tunisia, his career started at the age of 17 in Shubij. This brought him to the Venice Film Festival, where she came to the attention of the Italian film industry.

Sophia Loren had already become a star globally, and French actor Brigit Bardot was making waves as a new sex symbol. In the meantime, Claudia was seen as Italy’s response to the Brigit Bardot. His career in Hollywood was only partially successful as he was not interested in giving European film. In a 2002 interview with The Guardian, he explained that the Hollywood studio “I wanted me to sign a contract of uniqueness, and I refused. Because I am an European actress and I was going there for films.”

He won Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at Venice Film Festival, nearly 40 years after his early appearance on screen. In 2000, Cardinley was named a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization to protect women’s rights.
