Coldplay concert: Chris Martin apologizes for British rule in concert: Thank you for forgiving all the bad things that Great Britain has done

During Coldplay’s smash hit concert in Mumbai on Saturday (January 18, 2025), the band’s frontman Chris Martin won the hearts of his fans when he talked about pre-independence history and apologized for the period when the British Ruled India.

The lead singer thanked fans for coming to the concert in large numbers at the DY Patil Stadium. “This is our fourth tour to India, and our second chance to play. We couldn’t have played in front of a better crowd,” Martin said to the packed house.

“Thank you for coming. Thank you for welcoming us even though we’re from Great Britain. Thank you for forgiving all the bad things Great Britain has done and welcoming us into your home,” he said, as fans cheered him on. In the midst of the exciting concert, Martin charmed the audience with his humor and curiosity.

As part of his Music of the Spheres World Tour, Martin performed chartbuster tracks Heaven, viva la vida, adventure of a lifetime, Yellow, Fix youAnd starry skyamong others.

In an interesting moment, Martin saw a fan holding a placard with ‘Jai Shri Ram’ written on it. Out of curiosity, he uttered this phrase, causing a wave of excitement in the crowd.

After this he said, “What does Jai Shri Ram mean? There must be something good.” Martin’s inquiry into the meaning of the phrase further increased the audience’s excitement.

Throughout the evening, Martin made a concerted effort to connect with the audience by speaking in different languages. His efforts to speak Hindi and Marathi were most warmly welcomed.

At the beginning of the concert he spoke to the crowd in Marathi, Hindi and English. He began by saying in Marathi, “You are at peace today (You all look beautiful today).”

After this he said in Hindi, “You all are very welcome on our show. We are very happy to be in Mumbai(You all are very welcome to our show. We feel happy to be in Mumbai.) He said, “Sorry, my Hindi and Marathi are bad, but I tried my best.”

The British musician thanked Indian fans for giving him the opportunity to perform in one of “our favorite places in the whole world”. The singer-songwriter would frequently check in on the crowd and ask about their well-being and hydration, taking care to ensure they were well taken care of.

The DY Patil Sports Stadium, which is primarily a cricket stadium though it is occasionally used for football, concerts and other events, was shining amid the colorful lights thanks to recyclable light wristbands, which All attendees were dressed up and a spectacular fireworks display was performed. At the end of the concert.

At one point the fireworks didn’t light at the proper time and Martin said, ‘It’s taking a while to light.’ Can we all make firework sounds?’ The crowd followed him in unison until the sky became light.

At the end of the concert, Martin stopped the song and teased the fans by saying that they needed to end it soon because it was time for Indian bowler Jasprit Bumrah to play cricket in the stadium.

“We had to end the show because Jasprit Bumrah wanted to come backstage and play cricket. Thank you all very much, good night. He says he needs to ball me,” she said, getting the crowd yearning for a few more songs. “We love you Jasprit. So, we are going to ask them to wait for 15 minutes. So, we’d like to play the song one more time, this time with the four of us and all 60,000 of you in the same breath,” Martin said.

As part of their ‘Music of the Spheres World Tour’, the British band performed one show on Sunday (January 19, 2025) and another show on Monday (January 20, 2025). The fourth show will be held on 25 January 2025 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Coldplay had previously performed in the country at the Global Citizen Festival in Mumbai in 2016. The British rock band also features guitarist Jonny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman, drummer and percussionist Will Champion and manager Phil Harvey. Before Coldplay took the stage, Shawn, Aliana and Jasleen Royal performed.
