The British Rock Band Coldplay did five shows in India in Mumbai and Ahmedabad in January. Concerts not only brought live music to the ears of fans, they became ground zero for the emergence of the country as a serious player in the global live entertainment.
According to a report by I-Parthenon And The two-night concert of Bookmyshow, Coldplay created an estimated economic impact of more than Rs 641 crore alone at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Of this, Rs 392 crore directly promoted the city’s economy.
The report said that it contributed Rs 72 crore to GST revenue for the Government of India.
The concerts proved to be more than only a musical extraordinary, painting over 2,22,000 fans during two nights. Flights and trains were packed, the hotels were charging up to Rs 1.6 lakh for two-night stay, and the city’s transport and hospitality industries all reached a high level of time.
Shopping patterns shifted, local business and tourism increased rapidly, sales of food and drinks skyrocketed, and even concert-inspired fashion trends saw an increase in sales.
For every 100 rupees spent on tickets, concerts spent an additional 585 rupees on food, shopping, transport and hotel. All the concerts stayed for longer than expected, spending more than one night in Ahmedabad, a significant boost to the city’s hospitality region.
The event also produced thousands of temporary jobs in many industries. A total of 15,000 employees worked as the crew of Coldplay, volunteers, bookmisho live employees and government officials. Out of which 9,000 employees were from Ahmedabad.
Coldplay, which included Chris Martin, Johnny Buckland, Gai Beriman and Will Champion, closed their India Tour in Mumbai on 18 January, followed by two more shows on 19 and 21. Two concerts took place in Ahmedabad on 25 and 26 January.
