TORONTO, Sept 5 – Comedian Ben Stiller said he is thrilled that his latest drama-comedy “Nutcrackers” has been selected to open the Toronto Film Festival, and is also screening for the first time at the ten-day festival.
“We made this little film independently … it was such a labor of love. I was so thrilled that Toronto saw it and wanted to open the festival with it,” Stiller said as he walked the red carpet with director David Gordon Green and the rest of the cast.
“Nutcrackers” is the heartwarming story of Michael, a Chicago real estate developer who is forced to care for his orphaned nephews in a small Ohio town after a terrible accident involving his sister and her husband.
Michael then discovers that the boys – played by Homer, Ulysses, Arlo and Atlas Jansen – are trained in ballet, and the film features their antics on a farm, where Stiller’s character chases pigs and chickens.
Unlike traditional film releases, “Nutcrackers” premiered at TIFF without any teasers or previews.
“This is the first audience I’d ever imagined when we were making the movie, because we made it in a little farmhouse, on a very small budget, just us and the kids and the animals and hoped we’d find a place where people would see it.
He said, “That’s it. We’ll show it and see who likes it, which is fun.”
The film also stars Linda Cardellini but has yet to secure a deal with a distributor. The 49th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival opened Thursday, with Hollywood stars returning to the red carpet after last year’s screenwriters’ strike.
