Focus Features has released the first trailer conclaveNew papal thriller from Oscar-winning filmmaker Edward Berger, known for his work All Quiet on the Western FrontThe film stars two-time Oscar nominee Ralph Fiennes (Menu) and is set to be a major contender in this year’s awards season.
conclave The film is an adaptation of Robert Harris’ novel and is scheduled to be released in limited theaters on November 1, before opening nationwide on November 8. The screenplay, written by Peter Straughan, is based on the secret and ancient tradition of selecting a new pope. Fiennes plays Cardinal Lawrence, who is responsible for overseeing the process after the sudden death of a beloved pope. When the church’s most influential leaders gather at the Vatican, Lawrence becomes embroiled in a conspiracy, and uncovers a secret that threatens to destabilize the foundations of the Catholic Church.
The film features a stellar cast, including Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, Lucian Msamati, Brian F. O’Byrne, Carlos Diehl, Merab Ninidze, Thomas Loibl, Sergio Castellitto, and Isabella Rossellini.
Berger, who achieved international fame All Quiet on the Western Frontwho received nine Oscar nominations and won four including best international feature, has also directed the psychological thriller The saga of a small player for Netflix, starring Colin Farrell and Tilda Swinton. In addition, he is also developing a new installment jason bourne franchise for Universal.
