D23 2024: Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross will succeed Daft Punk’s iconic original score for ‘Tron: Ares’

It was revealed at Disney’s D23 event in Anaheim on August 9 that Nine Inch Nails (NIN) would be composing the music for the highly anticipated film. Tron: Ares. The announcement was made by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who appeared during a teaser showing off the sci-fi sequel. This marks the first time the Oscar-winning duo’s film music will be credited under the name Nine Inch Nails, aside from their usual film scoring collaborations.

Choosing Nine Inch Nails Tron: Ares Given the impact of the previous film, there are a lot of expectations from this one. Tron: Legacywhich included a genre-defining score by Daft Punk. The D23 event also included a brief appearance on stage by Reznor and Ross, which further fueled excitement around the film. Tron: Ares It was also accompanied by a dramatic red laser reveal of the NIN logo, confirming the band’s participation in the soundtrack. The sequel, directed by Joachim Rønning, stars Jared Leto, Evan Peters, Jeff Bridges, Greta Lee and Jodie Turner-Smith, and is set to hit theaters on October 10, 2025. It continues the story of the 2010 film Tron: Legacywhich was itself a follow-up to the original Tron Released in 1982.

In Tron: AresJared Leto plays Ares, a program from the digital universe who ventures into the real world. Greta Lee’s character, Eve Kim, is a brilliant programmer whose work provides Ares with a way to enter our world. Evan Peters plays Julian Dillinger, a character who shares a name with the original villain Tron Peters hinted at Dillinger’s ominous nature, saying, “Dillinger doesn’t always portend good things for the people on the grid.”

In the film’s teaser, Dillinger is seen discussing the future of humanity and the advent of intelligent life within the digital world, setting the stage for the film’s exploration of AI and virtual worlds.

Nine Inch Nails will contribute both new songs and score Tron: Ares.His last album, Ghosts VI: LocustsIt was released in 2020. Also Tron: AresReznor and Ross are also working on Luca Guadagnino’s score Weird and Scott Derrickson’s sci-fi thriller The GorgeStarring Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller in lead roles.
