Singer Daler Mehndi talks about singing the reboot version of his classic song Na Na Na Re.

In a vintage turn of events for music lovers, Daler Mehndi’s evergreen hit Na Na Na Na Re is set to make a comeback in an upcoming film Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala, starring Tripti Dimri and Rajkummar Rao in the lead roles. Originally released in 1996, the song became an instant sensation. Reflecting on the revival of his superhit track after 25 years, the singer shared his excitement saying, “It was last performed in 1996 with Bachchan ji, his entry into Punjabi music was through me. So, the director wanted to see how I look after so many years.” Recalling the experience of shooting in Rishikesh, he says, “When we went to the set in Rishikesh, it was extremely cold and the shoot began at 6 pm near the Ganga.

The reboot of Na Na Na Na Re in the film marks an emotional journey for Mehendi, who expresses delight at retaining the original essence of the song. “It felt really good to recreate this song after 25 years with Rajkummar and Tripti, we had a lovely night shoot, bahut maja aaya. Known for his distinctive voice and energetic performance, Mehndi credits the song’s popularity to its original version. “I am so happy that the song was so famous that it is being recreated after so many years. Thanks to God, I am so lucky that I only sang the original song and it is still a superhit. It is played in every country at their parties. It is good that it was dubbed again in my voice.”

Expressing his reservations about the modern reboot of the classic hits, the singer asserted, “There are so many good original songs that are suddenly rebooted in some other singer’s voice which is not fair. I am glad I didn’t have to face it, it is a great and lucky thing for me. I have now added glory to it and sang it well. It was also recorded in my own studio. I have no complaints.”

Coming from a musical family, he clarifies his stance on preserving original compositions. “I am from a musical family and I have learnt a lot. If my own created beats, lyrics and tunes are used, I will have no problem with a reboot,” he says. “The problem comes when people start spoiling it with new artist’s new beats and changes. I recently did a show in Shimla, this song was one of their favourites. People are so attached to it that they think it is their song. People are dancing to all my legendary songs anyway, I will be happiest if there are more reboots of my hit songs,” he adds.
