Danny Boyle’s Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire to get sequel, LA company acquires film and TV rights

A newly launched production company called Bridge7 has acquired the rights for a film sequel and TV adaptation of the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire.

The company, based in Los Angeles, is run by producer Swati Shetty and veteran CAA agent Grant Kessman. The rights were acquired from UK-based company Celador, which produced and financed the 2008 hit film, in association with Film4.

About Slumdog Millionaire

Slumdog Millionaire, directed by Danny Boyle, stars Dev Patel and Freida Pinto. The film won eight Oscars, including Best Director and Best Picture.

The story revolves around Jamal (Patel) and his brother Salim, two poor boys from Mumbai, who meet a girl named Latika (Pinto). Anil Kapoor’s portrayal of the charismatic game show host Prem Kumar became one of the standout performances in the film.

The story describes his struggles, including the death of his mother in a religious riot, and his journey through hardship. The film also features Jamal’s participation in the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, where he goes on to win Rs 25 million, and inspires millions in the process.

“Some stories stay with us long after the credits roll, and Slumdog Millionaire is undoubtedly one of them. Its narrative is universal, transcends cultural and geographical boundaries and it epitomizes the stories we love – that combines entertainment with a deeply humanizing experience,” Shetty and Kessman said in a statement quoted by The Hollywood Reporter.

Celador will be working with Bridge7 on the upcoming sequel. The deal was brokered by Petre Top in Los Angeles and Nick Miller of Simon Muirhead Burton in the UK, with Jessica Hudson and James Kay of Sheridans in the UK representing Celador International.
