David Lynch reveals emphysema diagnosis, director says he ‘will never retire’

Master filmmaker David Lynch has said he has emphysema, and that in the post-Covid-19 era, getting sick even with a cold would be “very bad” for him.

The 78-year-old is known for directing films such as Mulholland Drive, Eraserhead, blue Velvet, Straight story, lost Highway and TV series twin PeaksHe said he could only “walk a short distance before he runs out of oxygen.”

“I have emphysema from smoking for a long time and so I stay home whether I want to or not,” Lynch explained. “… And now, because of COVID, it would be really bad for me to get sick, even with a cold.” Sight and sound This is stated in the magazine’s September cover story, via the Independent.

Emphysema is a progressive lung disease that causes breathing problems.

Hours after the interview was published, Lynch said in an Instagram post on Tuesday that he “used to really enjoy smoking” but has quit smoking for more than two years. “I recently had a lot of tests and the good news is that I am in perfect health except for emphysema,” he wrote. He added, “I am full of joy and I will never retire. I want to let you all know that I really appreciate your concern.”
