David Lynch reveals emphysema diagnosis: “I will never retire”

Hollywood film director David Lynch on Monday revealed that he is suffering from a chronic lung disease called emphysema, but it has not forced him into retirement. “Yes, I have emphysema due to many, many years of smoking,” David Lynch wrote on X (formerly Twitter). David Lynch, 78, originally discussed the diagnosis in an interview published in British film magazine Sight & Sound, where he said the condition affected his mobility and he was only able to continue directing remotely, according to multiple media reports.

The director cited emphysema, a chronic lung disease that causes breathing problems, as the “price” of his smoking habit.

He wrote, “I have to say that I used to enjoy smoking very much, and I love tobacco — the smell of it, lighting a cigarette, smoking it — but there is a price to pay for that pleasure, and for me that price is emphysema.”

In the same social media post, David Lynch said he hasn’t smoked a cigarette in two years and — barring a diagnosis of emphysema — he’s “in very good health.”

“I am so full of happiness and I will never retire,” David Lynch wrote. “I just want to let you all know that I really appreciate your concern.”
