Deadpool and Wolverine could explode at the box office, breaking records as an R-rated movie

The silly pairing of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman created an all-time high demand for Deadpool and Wolverine. But who knew the numbers would plummet even before the actual premiere date of the insanely anticipated film?

Marvel’s first R-rated MCU film is set to set a precedent different from others by creating and breaking unknown records. Deadline brings to attention a new report from The Quorum, a platform dedicated to distributing pre-release film tracking to the general public, meaning the upcoming trailblazing hit is already projected for a $200-$239 million domestic opening in the US.

Deadpool and Wolverine early box office earnings estimates

Why is this such a serious issue? First, the downturn in the box office economy has rarely seen a hit film achieve such massive numbers in recent times. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die proved to be an unexpected early success despite falling out of the box office spotlight, as it provided a massive box office boost by grossing $56 million domestically.

Secondly, no other R-rated film has ever grossed $200M before. So, the Deadpool threequel, which is separate from the movie series, is set to take a remarkably different path.

The first Deadpool film currently holds the domestic box office record for an R-rated opening, registering $132.4M in February 2016. However, those figures can’t be credited to the MCU as the upcoming Friends film is credited as Deadpool’s official entry this side of the Marvel universe, with Disney having acquired 21st Century Fox fairly late in the game.

Let’s assume those projected numbers are officially reported when the film hits theaters on July 26. In that case, it could even be called the biggest opening of the summer, surpassing even the projected $100 million opening of Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 this weekend.

According to Quorom, Deadpool & Wolverine also have the highest PLF scores, meaning audiences are already in tune with their specific desire to see this film in a premium format.

At the moment, statistics show that 66% of people are interested in seeing the film, 61% would prefer to see it in theaters, and 77% are willing to pay to see it. Furthermore, estimates for the upcoming Fantastic Deadpool movie premiere have the potential to grow even further than current estimates.
