After running for 10 days in theatres, deadpool and wolverine Excluding inflation, it is the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.

In its second weekend, the Marvel Studios blockbuster starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman continued to rock theaters, earning $97 million on Sunday according to studio estimates. That brought its two-week total to $395.6 million, surpassing the longtime top R-rated feature. The Passion of Christwhich held that mark for 20 years with a domestic gross of $370 million.

Around the World, directed by Shawn Levy deadpool and wolverine has grossed $824.1 million in ticket sales in a short time, far exceeding the global sales of the first two films combined. Dead Pool The original 2016 film grossed $782.6 million worldwide; the 2018 sequel grossed $734.5 million.

The weekend’s primary challengers struggled.

M. Night Shyamalan’s latest thriller, NetIt managed a modest opening of $15.6 million in 3,181 theaters for Warner Bros. Josh Hartnett plays a serial killer who is hunted by police at a pop concert. The film was not screened for critics before opening day and scored lower in reviews (48% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) than Shyamalan’s films. Audiences gave it a C+ CinemaScore.

With a budget of approximately $35 million, most of which Shyamalan himself financed, Net It didn’t need a huge start. But it might struggle to get even.

“This is a soft opening for an M. Night Shyamalan suspense crime thriller,” wrote David A. Gross, a film consultant who publishes a newsletter for Franchise Entertainment. “The writer/director’s films tend to out-gross other original thrillers, and that’s true here, but this opening is not on the level of recent Shyamalan films.”

Live-action Harold and the Purple Crayon adapted from a classic kids’ book, also didn’t make much of an impact in theaters. The Sony Pictures release grossed $6 million. It too was disappointed by critics (28% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes), though audiences (A- CinemaScore) liked it more. “Harold and the Purple Crayon,” starring Zachary Levi, cost about $40 million to make.

TwistersUniversal Pictures’ disaster film is a box office bomb. It finished second with $22.7 million in its third weekend. The sequel to Lee Isaac Chung’s original 1996 film, which starred Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos, has earned $195.6 million domestically. It has made less of an impact overseas, however. Twisters The film is doing particularly well in North American theaters, dropping only 35% from the previous week.

Hollywood closed July as its best month in a year and its first $1 billion month since July 2023. The comparison to last year isn’t favorable, though – July was when barbie And oppenheimer was launched – A pair of The Walt Disney Company releases inside out 2 And deadpool and wolverine (the two top films of the year) powered a banner month for the film industry.

However, memories of the difficult times at theaters in the spring and early summer are still fresh, when a sparse release calendar and some notable flops led to box office losses. On Friday, AMC Theatres, North America’s largest chain, reported a loss of $32.8 million for the second quarter of 2024.
