Seven timeless stories, live performances and a stellar cast of veteran actors including Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah, Ratna Pathak Shah, Lillete Dubey and Vinay Pathak are set to rock the stage of the fifth season of the Delhi Theatre Festival (DTH).
This festival, which has become the foundation stone for theatre in Delhi-NCR, will begin tonight. old World Based on the 1977 work by Russian playwright Alexei Arbuzov old Worldand translated into English by Ariadne Nicolaoff. It is a conversation between two characters, Rodion (played by Naseeruddin), the medical chief of a sanatorium, and Lydia (Ratna), who has arteriosclerosis. The play depicts the affection between two lonely people.
Delhiites will get to witness some of the best theatrical performances and enjoy a wonderful experience over the next three days (September 20-22) as Alchemist Live brings the popular festival back to the city. The plays are being staged across four venues – Siri Fort Auditorium, Kamani Auditorium, OP Jindal Auditorium and Orana Convention in Gurugram – to give theatre lovers from different parts of the city a chance to witness the best of theatre.
Shabana Azmi returns to the capital’s stage after a hiatus with Girish Karnad Broken Images. She is playing the challenging role of two sisters and their many images are intertwining. ”DTH holds a special place in my heart, performing here is an exhilarating experience and it fills me with both excitement and anxiety,” she said in a statement

Based on a short story by Twinkle Khanna and directed by Lillete Dubey, Salaam Noni Appa It is about breaking stereotypes and being open to new adventures to rediscover what makes life worth living. Lillete, who plays the central character in this autumnal romance, says she is thrilled to be participating in DTH in her hometown, where she started out more than five decades ago.
Prabhu Tony, COO and Co-Founder, Alchemist Live, says given the high expectations of the public, this year the energy-driven festival is exploring theatrical variety.
Three other big-cast dramas are also setting new standards: one on one dhamaal Written by Ayesha Menon, it is a gripping collage of modern India in nine monologues; Lillete Dubey retells the Mahabharata in a rock ballad style JayaThe two-hour production is a visual montage of key events through Yudhishthira’s eyes; Rajat Kapoor directs the satirical adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth – what’s done is done – With which the festival will come to an end.
Each season gets better with a mesmerizing selection of plays, stellar performances by renowned actors and a vibrant atmosphere that celebrates the magic of live theatre. “Audiences can look forward to a whirlwind of emotions, laughter and drama this season too,” says Sanjay Khanna, CEO, American Express, which sponsors the event.
