Devshayani Ekadashi 2024: Date and Time, Significance, Rules, Rituals and Mantra

One of the most auspicious days for Hindu devotees who worship Lord Vishnu with great passion and dedication is Devshayani Ekadashi, which falls on July 17, 2024. Falling on the eleventh day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Ashadha, this day is very important from a religious and spiritual point of view. Devshayani Ekadashi is observed twice a month during Shukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha, and it is one of the 24 Ekadashi celebrations observed throughout the year. Devotees follow strict fasting guidelines on this day, which include abstaining from tamasic food and remaining celibate. To receive blessings, people perform rituals such as chanting mantras and reciting Vishnu Sahasranama. This holy festival honors Lord Vishnu and Lord Krishna, granting followers forgiveness from all kinds of suffering and atonement for past sins, as well as entry into Vaikuntha Dham, the abode of Sri Hari.

Importance

For Hindus, Devshayani Ekadashi is a major and holy day honoring Lord Vishnu and Lord Krishna. Devotees observe a strict fast and offer prayers on this day, breaking their fast the next day on the Dwadashi tithi. It is believed that the Ekadashi fast is a powerful fast that can bestow salvation or moksha as well as freedom from pain, absolution for past crimes and a place in Vaikuntha Dham, the home of Sri Hari. However, there are a lot of rules to be followed to keep this fast.

Rule –

  • Do not pluck Tulsi leaves: It is forbidden to pluck Tulsi leaves on Ekadashi.
  • Do not use soap or body wash: Devotees should not take bath using soap or body wash.
  • Speak politely: Avoid speaking badly about others.
  • Maintain celibacy: It is important to maintain celibacy during the fast.
  • Avoid Tamasic Food – Do not consume Tamasic food like eggs, onion, garlic and meat.

Custom

  1. Morning Bath: Get up early and take a holy bath to start the day.
  2. Preparation of deities: Install the idols of Lord Vishnu, Lord Krishna and Laddoo Gopal Ji on a wooden plank after giving them a holy bath.
  3. Prasad: Light a lamp of Desi Ghee and offer yellow flowers or garland, dry fruits, five seasonal fruits, Tulsi leaves and Panchamrit.
  4. Recitation and Chanting: Recite Vishnu Sahasranama with full devotion and pure feelings. Keep chanting “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevay” and Krishna Mahamantra throughout the day.
  5. Dietary Observance: Those who cannot observe strict fasting can eat the Satvik foods recommended for fasting in the evening after sunset.
  6. Do charity: Do charity, as these acts are especially meritorious on this day.
