Dharmendra dies at the age of 89: Political leaders across the country remember his immense contribution to Indian cinema

New Delhi: Several political leaders, including the chief ministers of Uttarakhand, West Bengal and Bihar, on Monday expressed deep grief over the demise of veteran Bollywood actor Dharmendra and termed his demise as an irreparable loss to the Indian film industry. He further said that his immense contribution to Indian cinema will continue to inspire generations.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also expressed grief and wrote on Instagram, “Deeply saddened by the demise of the great actor-hero Dharmendra ji in Mumbai today. His immense contribution to Indian cinema will continue to inspire generations. My heartfelt condolences to his family, fraternity, fans and followers. Hema Malini ji, her sons and daughters will now carry forward his rich legacy. May his soul rest in peace.”

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed condolences, saying, “The demise of popular film actor Dharmendra is sad. It is an irreparable loss for the art and film industry. We pray to God to give peace to his departed soul. We pay our humble tributes.”

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu also wrote on Twitter, “Deeply saddened by the demise of Dharmendra ji. A great actor, he touched the hearts of millions with his unforgettable performances. His contribution to Indian cinema will be remembered for generations. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and countless fans.”

BJP MP and actor Ravi Kishan also paid an emotional tribute on Twitter, writing, “Veteran actor Shri Dharmendra Deol, fondly known as He-Man and Dharam Paaji by the entire nation, passed away today at the age of 89. The demise of this great pillar of Indian cinema is an irreparable loss to the film industry. His illustrious journey spanning over six decades touched the hearts of millions and took Hindi cinema to new heights. His demise is very sad for me too. He treated me fondly and his memories, his affection and his personality will always inspire me.

NCP leader Supriya Sule also expressed grief, saying, “Deeply saddened by the demise of veteran actor Dharmendra. A true legend whose warmth, simplicity and remarkable contribution to Indian cinema will always be remembered. Heartfelt condolences to Hema ji, Deol family, his friends and fans. May his soul rest in peace.”

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena leader Raj Thackeray paid an elaborate tribute, saying, “Veteran actor Dharmendra ji has passed away. In Indian cinema, it is often said that for a ‘superstar’ there are storms and downfalls. But Dharmendra ji is an exception. He gave many superhit films, yet the title of superstar never overpowered him, nor did he let it. In the 1960s, a handsome young man named Dharmendra was born with a strong body, charming smile and natural He had a good nature.” Masculinity—but without any arrogance—appeared on screen, and it ruled Hindi cinema for several decades.”

His roles in films like Sholay, Chupke Chupke, Anupamaa, Satyakam and Dillagi are still alive in the minds of the audience.
