As Stranger Things heads toward its final chapter, fans are closely following the fate of Nancy Wheeler and Jonathan Byers. With Season 5, Volume 2 now streaming, the Netflix duo and the creators have made it clear where the couple stands and what it means for Nancy’s future.

director Shawn Levy, who directed episodes 6 and 7, told Netflix Tudum that the characters truly believe they are going to die, which ultimately allows them to open up. He described this exchange as one of the most emotionally raw Jonathan-Nancy scenes of the series.
During the conversation, Jonathan admitted that he never applied to Emerson College, while Nancy admitted that she avoided visiting him in California because she needed the distance. Jonathan also reveals that he has been carrying an engagement ring hidden inside a John Coltrane cassette, only to give Nancy what he calls a “non-proposal”, explaining that marriage will not fix what is broken between them.

Nancy accepts. After a few moments, the mud hardens, and they are saved, but their relationship is not. As Netflix Tudum confirms, while the characters make it out alive, their romance effectively ends there.
Did Nancy end up with Steve?
Despite long-standing fan speculation about a possible reunion between Nancy and Steve Harrington, Season 5, Volume 2 does not show Nancy choosing Steve romantically.
There is no confirmation that Nancy will end up with Steve by the end of the volume.
For now, Nancy is left alone on the show as the story moves towards its final confrontation with Vecna.

While Jonathan and Nancy’s story appears to be over on screen, the actors behind them remain a real-life couple. In a recent interview cited by People, Charlie Heaton opened up about working with longtime girlfriend and co-star Natalia Dyer, describing the experience as “priceless.”
