Director alleges ‘Squid Game’ copied his film ‘Luck’, Netflix says claim holds no merit

New Delhi: Director Sohum Shah has filed a lawsuit against Netflix accusing it of allegedly plagiarizing his 2009 film “Luck” to make the Korean series “Squid Game”, a claim the streamer said on Sunday has no merit.

Director alleges ‘Squid Game’ copied his film ‘Luck’, Netflix says claim holds no merit

“This claim has no merit. ‘Squid Game’ was created and written by Hwang Dong Hyuk and we intend to vigorously defend this matter,” a Netflix spokesperson said in a statement.

“Squid Game”, which became the most-watched series on Netflix when it premiered in 2021, is a “ripoff” of the film starring Imran Khan, Shruti Haasan and Sanjay Dutt, according to lawsuit documents obtained by US outlet TMZ.

Produced, written, and directed by Hwang Dong Hyuk, “Squid Game” is the story of 456 players, all in deep financial debt, who were brought into a secret drama to play a deadly children’s game to win a prize of 45.6 billion won.

“Luck”, on the other hand, revolves around an underworld kingpin who recruits ‘luck’ people from around the world to take part in a series of challenges designed to test their luck as gamblers from around the world place bets on them.

According to TMZ, in “Luck,” “the characters begin competing and only realize that losing any challenge means death, and that the death of a fellow contestant also increases the amount of money available to the remaining contestants.”

In the documents, Shah also claimed that he had written the story of the film around 2006 and the film was released in July 2009.

In several interviews, Hwang has revealed that the idea for the Netflix series first came to him in 2008.

Shah’s allegations come just months before the second season of “Squid Game,” starring Korean star Lee Jung-jae, premieres on Dec. 26.
