In an interview with Bajarbattu Duniya, Varma revealed that the idea for the final sequence was thought of early in the process.

“The last scene was in my mind from the beginning,” he said.

He affirmed that the precise, definite meaning of the final action is a hidden secret, known only to a select few:

Emraan Hashmi (playing the role of Abbas)

Yami Gautam (who plays Shazia)

Rishika (Production Designer)

The director shared the creative collaboration that led to the visual elements, which tied into the plot:

“I said to the designer, ‘I’m doing this special thing, so just give me the rose garden.’ He didn’t just give me a rose garden, he gave me the punchline of a rose garden.”

Verma elaborated on how Gulab was intricately woven throughout the story to provide Shazia a legal path forward:

“When Yami returned home… I asked, ‘How will we weave this?’ In their first meeting, Imran gave a rose to Yami and that dried rose remained in his book. Even during all the court cases, the rose remains in Imran’s pocket till the end. And finally, he just takes it out and puts it there.”

When pressed for his personal meaning, Varma declined to reveal it, saying that his intention was to keep the conversation alive: “Everyone is giving different reasons, and everyone is true. I don’t want to reveal my reason. I want to have a conversation with the audience.”

Emraan Hashmi was cast for the role of Abbas

Verma also highlighted the initial challenge of casting the complex antagonist Abbas Khan.

“We had only one question: Who would play Abbas?” Verma was remembered. “It was important that Abbas’s character had the right balance and was really understood.”

While Emraan Hashmi’s name kept coming up again and again, the director initially considered it a far-fetched move. He attributes the successful casting to sheer willpower:

“A name kept floating around in my mind, but it didn’t seem like a possibility. But, as the saying goes in life, if you want something, I guess you ask the universe for it.”

Verma then contacted his casting director to arrange a meeting with the actor, a successful move that brought out unique intensity and charm in Emraan Hashmi’s character.

Haq, which also stars Yami Gautam and is inspired by the historical Shah Bano case, has been widely praised for its powerful performances and nuanced treatment of a sensitive subject.
