Modern setting

For audiences over the age of 16, drama hero revolves around the life of a man and a woman, which both are waiting for a delay in the lounge of a small town airport. The woman instigated the man in conversation, established a series of stories, including Ramayana and Mahabharata: two characters of Khurpanakha and Shakuni. Written by Poile Sengupta, the play is directed by Samragini Dasgupta and performed by Jimmy Xavier and Urvashi HV HinduSamargani said that the play hit a raga with her, when she first read it in the drama library by Bhasha Center. “The drama was fun, it was sarcastic, humble, fine, and it was talking about some very important things. It felt that the play includes things that are really relevant today, while using mythological characters, even using mythological characters, which made it very reliable. The drama is a new dimension for modern day problems.”

“Conversation about sexuality, politics, war, agency, all these aspects came out through a very interesting dynamic in this drama, which is very excited to direct it,” Samragani explained.

Several versions

Talking about bringing two epics to the play, Mahabharata and Ramayana, Samragani said that at his home, growing with these mythology, especially the Ramayana, was always seen through a feminist perspective. He said, “There are many versions of these epics, especially Ramayana. But with this drama, it gives you a new set of these epic views,” he said.

The director said that Poil Sengpta has given him a very beautiful place to play through this script. “Poil’s script helped us understand the new dimensions of these two characters. It is easy for me to find out easily,” Samargani said.
