who have experienced butterfly And Agra I will confirm that Kanu Bahl’s cinema is not easy to watch. Always reflecting the darker shades of everyday reality, the filmmaker has the ability to scratch the soul of his desperate characters struggling to cling to their petty power structures and, in the process, leave a mark on the audience’s conscience. .

This week, he portrays the complex world of intrepid crime journalist Joey Bagg. From his byline In love, for sex, Joey turns to women. Early in the film, during a night raid, when a constable asks Joy why he is grumpy, the officer in charge replies, “Tell him a story, and his mood will improve.”
The Afternoon is not based on the events surrounding the murder of Jyotirmoy Dey, a veteran crime journalist who started his career at the Dispatch and Courier. dispatch There is much more implicit than what is revealed on the news pages and in Hansal Mehta’s OTT series Scoop About the conspiracy behind the case.
dispatch (hindi)
director: Kanu Behal
Mould: Manoj Bajpayee, Shahana Goswami, Archita Agarwal, Ri Sen
Runtime: 150 minutes
Story: In his effort to stay relevant, when a seasoned crime reporter investigates a murder story, he steps into a minefield.
Founded in 2012, when newspapers’ digital-first policy made print journalists look for niches to secure their positions, Joy is chasing a story that can keep him on Page 1 for a few days . When Shetty, a currency smuggler, is shot dead in broad daylight, Joy seizes the opportunity.
But the story of guns and the underworld also assumes a digital footprint. The common rivalry between Rajan and D Company leads him to the 2G spectrum case and hawala transactions through the black-to-white business of T-20 league. As he sets out to connect the dots, his sources caution that he is punching well above his weight. But Joy is driven by an inexplicable passion towards her job, encapsulated by the Gandhian philosophy, ‘Live as if you have to die tomorrow’, Kanu adds among the many clues in the background to convey the motivations of his complex characters. For those who can read the meaning of Kanu’s poetic tribute New York Post Titled, “Headless body in topless bar”, the film says that investigative stories cannot see the light of day if corporates and big media have vested interests in running newspapers. A hack can play with small leaks of information but cannot capture the big picture. Ironically, the company that acquired Despatac amid the investigation is called Savera.
Kanu, along with co-author Ishani Banerjee, create an ethically agnostic mediascape where information is currency, silence is traded, and relationships are strictly transactional. Joey is not a larger than life writer out to change the world. He is like the mouse that dares to tickle the elephant’s trunk and then runs away looking for another chance to be on the cover page.

The film’s architecture resembles the world where its protagonist works. Someone in the background is calling the police raid a circus. Like the shell companies that create the plot, Kanu also invests in sex and violence as middlemen to keep the truth hidden. Like the violence, the intimate scenes in the film are intense as well as casual.
The film’s approach, particularly the way the female characters are portrayed, appears to be problematic. However, as the film progresses, you realize that the gender dynamics and sexual chemistry are also manipulative. The glances that Joey and the women in his life exchange in heated situations give the impression that people are trying to measure each other up. Joy does not want to adjust to his wife Shweta (Shahana Goswami) as she cannot live with his mother and disabled brother.

Instead of the self-reliant Shweta, he feels more in control when he is with Prerna (Archita Aggarwal), who is much younger than him and works in the same journalism field. But Prerna has her own ambitions and probably sees Joey as a stepping stone. Kanu has portrayed the age difference between Joy and Prerna and the mindset that comes with it very well. Then there’s Noori Rai (Ri Sen). Once Joy’s protégé, she is now his equal at a rival publication with her own network of sources. Beneath that charming facade, Nouri is a tough guy and can be easily found in the newsroom.
After a point, Kanu seems more interested in character study than crime busting, and Siddharth Dewan’s camera finds a lot of emotion in the expressive faces that evoke the gloomy Mumbai landscape. While Shahana underlines her flexibility, Archita surprises with her tensile strength. Bajpayee is the lead character in this serious crime drama which keeps the interest high.

with the audacity of colic, sexual tension of Gangs of WasseypurVulnerability of Aligarh and the mess of alleysOne can see many shades of the old Bajpayee in the latest version of Joy.
