DocuBase Fanatics discovers dedicated South Indian cinema fans!

Mumbai: The upcoming streaming documentary, ‘Fanatics’ gives a glimpse into how the loyal fans of South Indian superstars operate. It explores the emotional depth and social impact of fans’ unwavering loyalty.

It exposes the psyche of fans whose extreme acts of loyalty and devotion redefine the meaning of fandom. It promises to take viewers to the cultural realms of South India.

From building shrines to their idols to life-changing acts of devotion, this original documentary shows the intense emotional connection fans have with their stars and the deep consequences of these obsessions.

The documentary explores the origins of the extremely loyal fans starting from the era of Tamil actor-politician MG Ramachandran to Rajinikanth, Allu Arjun and other pan-Indian stars. It also includes interviews with Allu Arjun, Kiccha Sudeep and Vijay Sethupathi.

However, it is not just a linear path of fan celebration as the documentary also addresses the sadder side of fanaticism, where rivalry between fan groups sometimes leads to violence.

Talking about the documentary, Allu Arjun said, “Cinema has become a very strong, integral part of culture, it is no longer just a source of entertainment. And, in the South the stars are worshiped to a greater extent than I have seen anywhere else in the world. Many fans do amazing charity work, and it’s great energy that is being put into the right cause. All artists, whether they agree or not, have an influence on people and we must be responsible for what guides them subconsciously.

The documentary includes stories of fans piercing their tongues, getting tattoos on their bodies, and dedicating their lives to their ideals, and also highlights the symbiotic relationship between fans and the box-office success of South Indian films.

Kiccha Sudeep said, “As an actor, if you want to have a great career, I don’t think you can do it without a fan base. When I see people building temples for me or getting tattoos, to be honest I feel scared because I am a man with flaws. With time, you begin to understand the purity of his feelings and his immense love for you. It teaches you responsibility and makes you a better person.”

Produced by Studio 9, ‘Fanatics’ is set to release on DocuBay on December 7, 2024.
