Norwegian filmmaker Kristoffer Borgli is best known for his recent success with A24’s Nicolas Cage comedy Dream scenariohas been selected to direct and executive produce HBO’s upcoming series ShardsThis new project is based on the novel of the same name by Bret Easton Ellis.
Shards Set in Los Angeles in the early 1980s, the series follows a group of privileged high school students at the exclusive Buckley Prep School. The story revolves around seventeen-year-old Brett and mysterious new student, Robert Mallory, whose mysterious past intertwines with the lives of the group. As Brett becomes more and more obsessed with Mallory, his obsession is matched only by his fear of the Trawler, a serial killer terrorizing the city. The killer’s proximity and dangerous threats blur the lines between reality and Brett’s vivid imagination, trapping him in a cycle of paranoia and isolation.
In the beginning, Challengers Director Luca Guadagnino was rumored to direct several episodes of ShardsBut he has since exited the project. The series is set for three seasons, with each season consisting of ten episodes. Bret Easton Ellis, who will write all the episodes, hinted at new subplots exclusive to the series, which expand the original story of the novel. Ellis has also joined as executive producer along with Emmy winner Nick Hall (White lotus), Brian Young and Kathleen McCaffrey.
