Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson recently opened up about the emotional challenges he faced during his divorce from ex-wife Dany Garcia. The couple, who were married for 16 years, separated in 2007. “When you guys get married, as some of you may know, you sign up for the long term, but then it doesn’t always work out that way,” Johnson said on the Nov. 6 episode. Johnson admitted that his divorce had a devastating effect on his mental health and he was severely affected by depression. “I was really going through it at the time,” he said.
This also influenced his career choices. After the split, Johnson made a conscious effort to play lighter, family-friendly roles in films such as The Game Plan and Tooth Fairy. “I was trying to figure out my thing and this was the only thing I really wanted to do artistically,” he explains. “I didn’t want something that would challenge my courage to the very end. I wanted something that had a happy ending, and that was it.”
Even though the roles were chosen for personal reasons, Johnson said he really enjoyed making these films. “I loved making those movies,” he said.
