Dwayne got emotional talking about his character Maui and masculinity. He said, “Masculinity to me doesn’t mean being tough. It doesn’t mean being a badass. Powerful masculinity means having the confidence to look inside yourself and say, this is what I’m feeling, and it’s OK. This is my chest. I’ll gladly open it up to anyone who can help me.”

When he was first offered to voice the character of Maui in the Disney film in 2016, the actor told the media outlet, “I was like, ‘Okay, I know who this is.'” He further described the deity, saying: “This is someone who is very presentable, who puts on a show, who loves to hold court, sing and dance, and make people feel good.” The actor added, “But there’s a lot that’s brewing deep down that he’s going to eventually have to grapple with because it’s like a ball that you’re holding underwater. Eventually, you have to let go of the ball, and it’s going to burst.” Dwayne himself struggled with messages of vulnerability while growing up and coping with loss in his own life.

The Red Notice actor believes that playing Maui in the original film and the upcoming sequel will be important because it will show people that “you can be strong, you can be grown-up, you can be independent, but it’s okay to ask for help.” He added, “When you finally ask for help, the universe and your loved ones are always there to help you. Even the strongest people need help.” The actor is also a father to three daughters, Simone Johnson, 23, who he has with ex-wife Dany Garcia, Jasmine Johnson, 8, and Tiana Johnson, 6, who he has with wife Lauren Hashian, as reported by People.

The actor, popularly known as The Rock, will once again team up with Auli’i Cravalho, who plays Moana, for the sequel. The former revealed that the film will begin with Maui in the deep end of trouble. Cravalho revealed that the demigod and her character are “very much partners” this time around. “There’s not as much hierarchy and power between the demigod and the human. He trusts her to make the big decisions, and she trusts Maui to listen to her,” she told EW.
