Elliott Gould, Justin Trudeau, Helen Mirren and others mourn the death of Donald Sutherland

Famous fans, colleagues and family pay tribute to actor Donald Sutherland, star of ‘The Strange Man’. MASh, KluteAnd The Hunger GamesWho passed away on Thursday at the age of 88.

“Donald was a great guy, not just physically but in terms of talent. He was also extremely kind and generous. … It’s never easy to lose a person and the caliber of actor that Donald Sutherland was, but it really hurts because Donald was like a brother to me and a huge part of my career,” Sutherland said. Actor and Sutherland’s son, Kiefer Sutherland, broke the news of his father’s death to X. “It is with a very heavy heart that I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally consider him to be one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never afraid of a role, whether it was good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and loved what he did, and no one could ask for more. A life well lived.”

American director and filmmaker Ron Howard wrote on X, “I had the privilege of directing him in #Backdraft. One of the most intelligent, interesting and entertaining film actors ever. Incredible range, creative courage and dedication to presenting the story and the audience with the highest excellence.”

“Donald Sutherland was one of the most intelligent actors I ever worked with. He had an amazingly inquisitive mind, and was enormously knowledgeable on a wide variety of subjects. He combined this great intelligence with a deep sensitivity and a seriousness about his profession as an actor. All of this made him a legend of the film world,” said actress Helen Mirren, who co-starred with Sutherland in the 2017 film. Leisure Seekersin a statement.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau paid tribute to Sutherland on Christmas, calling him “a remarkable, great actor and a great Canadian”.

“Donald was a brilliant actor and a complex man who shared many exciting experiences with me, such as the FTA Show, an anti-Vietnam War tour that performed for 60,000 active-duty soldiers, sailors and Marines in Hawaii, Okinawa, the Philippines and Japan in 1971. I am heartbroken,” wrote Jane Fonda, who co-starred with Sutherland in the 1971 film. KluteOn Instagram.

“No words. That was very important,” said the former new York Times Film critic Janet Maslin, x.

Director Edgar Wright wrote on Instagram, “He starred in two of my all-time favorite and most influential films — Do not look now and 1978 Invasion of the Bodysnatchers. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg in terms of his great filmography. He was a funny, concise, but also intense and dramatic presence in many memorable films.”

“It was an honor to work with him many years ago, and I will never forget his charisma and ability. If you want a master class in acting, check him out ordinary people.” wrote actor Rob Lowe, who appeared alongside Sutherland in the 2004 miniseries. Salem’s Lotthrough the x.

Actor Elijah Wood wrote on X, “Oh man. Goodbye, Donald Sutherland.”

“We lost a legend, a journeyman actor who created unique and believable characters every time he stepped in front of the camera,” said Jon Cassar, who directed both Donald and Kiefer Sutherland in 2015’s leavethrough the x.
