Emergency: Kangana Ranaut regrets theatrical release; Better deals available on OTT

Mumbai: Kangana Ranaut, known for her outspoken nature and fearless choices, has openly admitted her regret over the release strategy of her first solo directorial film ‘Emergency’. In a recent interview with News18, the actor and filmmaker revealed that choosing a theatrical release on an OTT platform might have been a wrong move, especially considering the challenges he faced.

The film, which revolves around India’s Emergency period (1975–77), faced delays due to certification issues with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Kangana expressed disappointment over the months-long delay, saying, “I felt it was a wrong decision to release it in theatres. I could have got a better deal on OTT and avoided censorship.

The CBFC, which reports to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, required significant cuts and changes to clear the film for theatrical release. Kangana admitted that she underestimated the complexities of the certification process and its impact on the film’s message.

Kangana also highlighted the challenges of a theatrical release of a politically charged film like Emergency. He said, “If the film had gone straight to streaming it would not have been dissected like this. Theaters bring a different level of scrutiny, and I didn’t anticipate how much the essence of a film could be changed during the censorship process.

Apart from the release format, Kangana admitted that she second-guessed her decision to direct the film herself. While he took the responsibility of ensuring creative control, he now feels that collaborating with an experienced director can reduce the burden.

With the increasing prominence of OTT platforms, many filmmakers have opted for digital releases to reach a wider audience without the constraints of theatrical screenings and censorship. Kangana acknowledged the change, saying, “OTT platforms offer creative freedom and a guaranteed audience base. For a politically sensitive film like Emergency, this could have been a better choice.

Despite her views, Kangana is optimistic about her journey as a filmmaker. She hopes to use these experiences to make more informed decisions in the future. As far as the Emergency is concerned, it continues to generate curiosity and discussion despite its challenges.
