Mumai: Akshay Oberoi opens up about his career, his approach to choosing roles and the realities of sustaining oneself in the competitive film industry. Known for his versatility and commitment to his art, Akshay candidly discussed the challenges and rewards of his journey so far in an exclusive interview with Zee News English.
On being a “starving” actor
Describing himself as a person very passionate about acting, Akshay said, “I am a very hungry actor. I love acting and working and that’s what I focus on. Films choose you; you don’t choose films. I I know my weaknesses – I am not good at networking or marketing, my entire focus is on becoming a better actor.
He credited projects like Fighter for opening new doors in his career, leading to opportunities in films like Sunny Sanskari’s Tulsi Kumari and Toxic.
grateful not to be stereotyped
Despite the ups and downs, Akshay is grateful for the diversity in his roles, “I have never been stuck in a single image in my career. This year too, what I am doing in Sunny Sanskari’s Tulsi Kumai is very different from what I am doing in Toxic. “That diversity is a blessing.”
On choosing work and paying bills
Akshay was very honest about his position in the industry. Although he has to accept or reject projects, he admitted that his choices are often driven by practical considerations, “I’m not Shah Rukh Khan who can say, ‘I won’t do this film, I’ll do that.’ , I am not in that position. I choose whatever comes my way. If it is a big commercial film with a great supporting role, I can take it as a lead role in a small project. My decisions are based on character, the job I am given and the need to run the house.
He further said, “I feed my child, bear his school expenses and run my household to make ends meet. I don’t do any other work, nor do 100 brands follow me. The only way to pay my bills is to face the camera and act.”
Excited for upcoming projects
Akshay expressed his excitement for his upcoming roles. She stars alongside Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor in Sunny Sanskaari’s Tulsi Kumari directed by Shashank Khaitan, while Toxic stars Kannada superstar Yash. Both projects reflect his commitment to diversifying his filmography and taking on challenging roles.
Akshay Oberoi’s down-to-earth approach and dedication to his art has won him accolades over the years.
