Family and friends of actor Johnny Wactor demand more action to catch his killers
LOS ANGELES — Family and friends of actor Johnny Wactor on Tuesday asked the public and authorities for help in finding and punishing his killers.
The former “General Hospital” actor was shot May 25 when he stopped thieves who stole the catalytic converter from his car in downtown Los Angeles, authorities said. No arrests have been made yet.
“I ask that anyone who knows anything about this please come forward,” the actor’s mother, Scarlett Vactor of South Carolina, said at a news conference outside Los Angeles City Hall. “It would be a relief to me and his brothers to know that they have been caught and convicted.”
Police had appealed for the public’s help on Aug. 5, when they released surveillance photos of three unidentified suspects and their getaway car — a stolen 2018 black Infiniti Q50.
Johnny Wactor was born in Charleston, South Carolina, and grew up in the nearby town of Summerville. He played Brando Corbin on the ABC soap opera “General Hospital” from 2020 to 2022. He has also appeared in films and TV series such as “Station 19,” “NCIS” and “Westworld.”
Scarlett Vactor previously said her son had just left work at a rooftop bar with a co-worker when he noticed someone standing near his car and thought it was being towed. His mother said a masked suspect opened fire.
“Grief is my constant companion,” she said Tuesday. “I can’t wish him a happy birthday on Aug. 31 — he’ll be 38 by then. I can’t ask if he’s coming home for Christmas. I can’t ask how his day was.”
Others at the news conference called on Mayor Karen Bass and other leaders to take more action to combat crime.
“We will make sure no family has to go through the pain that Scarlett is going through today,” said City Councilman Kevin de Leon. “We want justice for Johnny and we will get it.”
