History
Father’s Day was originally celebrated in the United States after a mining accident in Fairmont, West Virginia, which claimed hundreds of lives. The day is also associated with Sonora Smart Dodd, a woman from Spokane, Washington. Sonora wanted to pay tribute to her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War soldier who single-handedly raised his six children after the tragic death of his wife.
Sonora’s efforts resulted in the first Father’s Day celebration in Spokane on June 19, 1910. The United States formally recognized Father’s Day as a national holiday in 1972, when President Richard Nixon signed an executive order.
