Australian model Elle Macpherson has opened up about her secret breast cancer struggle. The 60-year-old, who received a “shock” diagnosis seven years ago, is now in “clinical remission”. Recalling her frightening health journey in a recent interview, Macpherson revealed she refused chemotherapy despite being recommended by 32 doctors.

The Welleco founder was diagnosed with HER2-positive estrogen receptor (ER)-positive ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) following a lumpectomy. “It was a shock, it was unexpected, it was confusing, it was scary in many ways,” she told Woman’s Weekly. Although it was difficult for her, McPherson saw it as an opportunity to “dig deep inside myself to find a solution that worked for me.”

Macpherson’s revelation comes ahead of her upcoming memoir, which is set to be released in November. The book, titled Elle: Life, Lessons, and Learning to Trust Yourself, highlights the Australian fashion icon’s holistic approach and lifestyle changes that helped her overcome cancer.
When she announced she wouldn’t be undergoing radiation and chemotherapy, her friends and family didn’t fully accept it. “I realized I was going to need my truth, my belief system during this time,” Macpherson, who played Janine Lacroix on the 1994 hit TV series Friends, told the outlet.

She added, “And that’s what I did. So, it was an amazing exercise in staying true to myself, trusting myself and trusting the nature of my body and the way I chose to do things.” The Sirens star admitted that “people thought I was crazy.” But she stuck to her guns because she felt the chemo and mastectomy were “too much.”
“Rejecting standard medical solutions was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. But rejecting my inner spirit would have been even harder,” she said, before adding that she opted for holistic and intuitive treatments that not only “resonated” with her but also helped her “address the emotional and physical factors associated with breast cancer.”
