Lisa Kudrow shares memories of Matthew Perry’s passing and reflects on dealing with grief and rewatching Friends to celebrate the cast’s bond.

“He said, ‘It wouldn’t be a surprise, but it would be a shock,’ and it was absolutely right,” Kudrow recalled. “It was no surprise, but it was a big shock. I must say, it blew us away. He was so smart—how did he know?” Despite the heartbreak, she found solace in believing that Perry passed away. “I think, personally, he died happy. In the days surrounding his passing, he was happy and excited about what would happen next.

To deal with the grief, Kudrow turned to memories from her working days Friend Watching the show again. “After Matthew passed away, the marathon happened, and I wanted to watch. It felt like it was a part of remembering, mourning and celebrating,” she shared. Watching one’s co-stars act also brought new appreciation. “Schwimmer is hilarious. Matt LeBlanc is making me laugh out loud. Jennifer-Oh, come on! She is very nice. And Courtney—oh my god, you’re so hilarious. How come you were never nominated for an Emmy? And Matthew, of course. genius. At that point, he was blowing me.

Kudrow admitted that there are still episodes of the beloved sitcom that she has never seen. “I’m still deciding how to deal with them,” she said. “I was there for the table read, but I didn’t always see the rewrites or the final version. I was balancing marriage, children and films. Sometimes, I would just come back for pickup for my scenes.

Moving on to brighter memories, Kudrow reflected on the cast’s 25th reunion in 2019, which was the first time all six stars — Lisa, Matthew, Jennifer, Courteney, Matt and David — came together in a decade. “It was great,” she said of the gathering. “The six of us had only had dinner once since the show ended. And yet, there were ten years after the finale! But it was fantastic. It felt like we didn’t miss a beat – we were just having dinner at someone’s house.”

Now, as Kudrow continues to celebrate Friend And the friendships that grew from it find comfort in the show’s enduring legacy and his fond memories of his time with Perry and the rest of the cast. “It’s part of remembering, mourning and enjoying what we’ve built together,” he said.
