Mumbai: The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) have urged all Indian filmmakers to reconsider Turkey as a filming destination in light of the country’s growing support for Pakistan.
In a statement released, the film body emphasized the need to take a stand against the Indian film industry to take a stand against the political alignment of Turkey, urging the manufacturers to find alternative places for their shoot.
FWICE, which represents 36 different crafts of workers, technicians and artists in India’s media and entertainment sector, has strongly urged producers to boycott Turkey as a shooting space. This call comes in response to Türkiye’s growing support for Pakistan on issues which are a significant concern for India’s national interests.
In the statement, FWICE said, “FWICE has always been firm in the belief that” the nation comes first. “In view of recent developments and Turkey’s constant situation in support of Pakistan, which has expressed concern about national integrity and security, we believe that it is not in the best interest of the Indian film industry to invest or support in any form that can indirectly support or benefit such a nation.”
This statement further read, “Turkish stance has been seen not only diplomatically but also in various international forums, where it has taken a situation contrary to the sovereign interests of India. As a deeply inherent industry in Indian soil and culture, we cannot remain indifferent with the dignity or security -reducing tasks of our country. And Turki has been boycotted as a place for the film shooting. Refruiting the diplomatic stance and aligns with the principles of mutual respect and non-intervention. ”
“FWICE has always been a pillar of strength for the Indian film industry and its workforce. At such a time our unity is important to send a strong, collective message: India’s sovereignty and dignity are non-pervasive. We hope that the Indian film community will respect the appeal,” the film body said.
FWICE’s statement promotes important backlash in India after Türkiye and Azerbaijan’s official support from Pakistan. On 8 May, both Türkiye and Azerbaijan issued official statements, expressing their support for Pakistan. Turkish Foreign Ministry condemned Operation Sindoor, calling it the “Stimulating Act”. These statements led to wide backlash on Indian social media, including many users, including celebrities such as Rupali Ganguly, voiced their anger and called to boycott Turkey.
