Shuchi Talati’s Sundance-winner girls will be girlswill premiere on Prime Video on December 18, the makers announced on Wednesday. An Indo-French co-production, it is backed by Ali Fazal and Richa Chadha’s production banner, Pushing Buttons Studios, and is their first offering.
Speaking at a trailer preview in Mumbai, Richa Chadha said that the film is made for Indian sensibilities and deserves to be watched by the domestic audience.
“Starting from Sundance, our film has won audience awards at major festivals, which means independent films can also be entertaining. They can make you laugh and give you lightness,” the co-producer said, emphasizing that it is not a “message” film.
He cited the success of films like We all imagine it as light, content, shameless And nocturnal As a testament to the vibrancy of Indian independent cinema despite the odds. “We are in a time of transition due to huge changes in commercial cinema and streaming. But having said that, I’m lucky that it’s a direct-to-digital release because it takes a lot of pressure off independent producers.”
Ali Fazal said he was tired of cinema that suffered from “bigness”, constantly pumping one’s adrenaline without texture or depth. The actor turned producer hopes to pioneer layered, intimate narratives Girls will remain girls.

“This is the kind of cinema we have come to love and we know our audiences love it too. They are going to theaters to watch this content. “It’s nothing strange or inappropriate that we’re presenting,” Ali said.
