Glen Powell opens up about the ‘beautiful journey’ of ‘Twisters’ and the co-stars who became friends

NEW DELHI: With little cell service and nothing to do while shooting for the disaster film “Twisters”, lead actor Glen Powell says the shoot was about more than just the work. It was about getting to know the “hearts” of his co-stars.

And co-stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos, who are now good friends, couldn’t agree more.

“We were literally in the middle of nowhere. We were in trucks in the plains of Oklahoma with very little cell service and nothing to do except get to know each other. And I know these guys’ hearts and we have an amazing ensemble cast here,” Powell told PTI in a Zoom interview with Edgar-Jones and Ramos.

“I feel so fortunate to have known them at this point in their careers and to have been able to encourage each other… it was a wonderful journey,” Powell said, adding that what she remembers most is the time she spent with her co-stars.

“Twisters”, directed by Lee Isaac Chung, is a sequel to the 1996 hit disaster film about hurricanes starring Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt. It has already been well received by critics and many have touted it as the next big summer release.

The film, which is released on July 18, stars Powell as Tyler Owens, a storm-chasing YouTube influencer, Edgar-Jones as Kate Cooper, a meteorologist plagued by past trauma, and Ramos as her friend Javi.

According to Powell, who has gained global popularity with the success of “Anyone But You” and “Hitman”, “Twisters” is a complex disaster film that examines the human condition and the resilience of people in the face of danger.

Singer-actor Ramos, who has appeared in films such as “A Star Is Born” and “In the Heights”, said it has been amazing to watch Powell’s career grow over the past few months, while Edgar-Jones, who found fame in the TV series “Normal People”, has fully embraced his first action role.

“It’s amazing to see what’s happening with Glenn this summer… I went to his premiere at Sundance for ‘Hitman,’ and that was amazing. And then ‘Anyone But You,’ and this.

“It’s great to see Daisy playing this action leading lady, just doing amazing… As an actor you want something new to happen in your career. We’re all in the middle of a storm in our careers, but I think it’s a perfect storm. We’re all doing really great individually. And hopefully we’ll grow together and individually with this movie and this franchise,” Ramos told PTI.

Edgar-Jones said a film career can be unpredictable, but working with “exceptionally talented” people such as Powell and Ramos has helped her make “lifelong friends”.

He said that he is happy that he got a chance to make a film that will bring the audience back to the theatres.

“Our aim was to make a film that would bring the audience back to the cinema and tried to make a film that would remind us of the great movies we used to flock to the big screen to see.”

Powell said he got into movies because he had always been a big fan of big blockbusters, but over time he realized how difficult it is to make such movies.

He said, “When something grows in size and scope, sometimes it loses its way emotionally. But our director Lee Isaac Chung really understands the complexity of human beings… ‘Twister’, the original, is not just about facts, it’s about a feeling and I think we captured that in this film and that’s what people are responding to… It’s a very rare and nostalgic film.”

The film is produced by Universal Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures, Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and The Kennedy/Marshall Company. Warner Bros. is also distributing the film internationally.

“I think Spielberg is really the godfather of modern blockbusters, because he had a sense of surprise,” Powell said.

Ramos believes Spielberg’s “Jurassic Park” as well as films such as “Rocky”, “Fast and Furious” and “Harry Potter” were major influences on him as a child.

Edgar-Jones credited producers Spielberg and Frank Marshall and Lee, who also directed “Minari,” for bringing back old memories.

“Because of that amazing team, this movie really has the essence of an old blockbuster. It’s shot on film, there’s a nostalgia for the quality of film when you watch it and you feel the same way walking out of the cinema as I remember feeling when I was a kid.

“…Our movie is a new chapter, but there’s a lot of the old in it as well. We’ve got a little bit of the original film in there. It’s great to be part of a history of great disaster movies that, Glenn said, have extraordinary characters and real human beings going through real situations, facing real threats. It’s not a superhero movie in the best way. These people exist, these storm chasers and the storms and the tornadoes are real,” he said.

For her, “Harry Potter”, “Hunger Games” and “Twilight” were movies that people around her were excited about.

Powell said the thing about big movies like “Harry Potter” is that they change your worldview.

“I had the pleasure of working with Bill Paxton years ago and he said he never looked at the sky the same way after making ‘Twister’,” Powell said. “Part of making a movie like this is that it redefines your view of the world and your place in the world, and I think that’s something wonderful.”
